A Little Hashish History

Have you ever studied cannabis from really, really close-up? Under a microscope, that silvery “dust” you see on high-quality flower is actually a tiny forest of glands called trichomes. Incredibly, ancient cannabis farmers in what is now called India and Pakistan discovered the secret of trichomes centuries before the invention of the microscope. When they learned to separate and concentrate those tiny glands, they created hashish: the world’s very first cannabis concentrate.

In the early days of hash-making—we’re talking roughly 1,000 years ago—those trichomes (typically known as kief) were hand-rubbed into spheres called charas, which are the inspiration behind our signature handcrafted “temple balls.”

Sometime around the 15th century came the advent of dry-sifting, which changed hashmaking forever. Now that trichomes could be collected, sieved, and stored for later use, hashish production spread throughout the East and eventually beyond as it became an important commodity.

You may have seen the chalky bricks that are the most common form of modern-day hash. While most people smoke it through a hand pipe or similar traditional methods, others are enjoying it with high-tech devices such as portable or tabletop vaporizers.

That said, because hash doesn’t rely on chemical- or solvent-based extraction methods, it requires a little preparation to use in a vaporizer. What do you have to know to do it right? Read on for the answers.

Vaporizing Hash vs Smoking Hash: How Does It Work?

Vapor

As we’ve shared previously, there are a number of ways to smoke hash—from hand pipes to healthstones and more. But with vaporizers becoming more versatile, common, and affordable, many of our customers ask can you vape hash? The answer is an enthusiastic Yes! (With some conditions.)

Vaping, of course, is the practice of heating cannabis flower (or, more commonly, concentrate) with a purpose-built device such as a portable vaporizer or a vape pen. (In fact, we produce our own exquisite hash rosin pens if you’d like to explore that option.)

Why choose vaping? In addition to it being a more efficient way to deliver cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, because vaping doesn’t involve the actual combustion of plant material, it tends to be less irritating to our lungs and airways.

That said, not every vaporizer is suitable for vaping hash. One key consideration is that when it’s heated, hash becomes a liquid. If your vape isn’t outfitted with a pad to retain this liquid, it can get on the heating element and electrical components, which could render it inoperative.

And while artisan-grade hash is a hand-crafted product, the very nature of hash—which hasn’t undergone any chemical or solvent-based extraction processes—demands that you use a vaporizer specifically designed to handle the challenges of vaping hash and the natural residues it creates.

With all that said, we’d like to share some hard-won tips we’ve learned over the years as we’ve honed our craft and perfected our technique.

Using a Hash Vaporizer: 5 Tips for Success

Whichever way you decide how to vape hash, we’d like to set you up for success. Here are 5 tips that will keep your hash vaporizer working reliably and smoothly for the foreseeable future.

1. Choose Your Device with Care

Compared with flower, hash should be vaporized at a higher temperature for best effects. Many experts recommend anywhere in the 410°F - 437°F (210°C - 225°C) range. If your current vaporizer can’t be dialed in to that range, consider purchasing a purpose-made hash vape.

In addition to temperature considerations, some hash vapes—such as the widely admired Storz & Bickel Mighty+—come with a “dosing capsule,” which does a great job of containing any residue produced during your vaping session. Some other well-rated hash-friendly vapes include the DynaVap “M” Series, the Linx Hypnos, and the ever-popular PAX Plus.

2. Use “Vape Wool”

A small heatproof pad made of degummed hemp fibers, vape wool is a crucial component in a hash vaporizer (it’s also key if you’re planning on vaping liquid concentrates such as live resin or terp sauce).

3. Go For Quality

Quality counts here. You want to choose a hash that is easy to break down into small pieces so as to expose the greatest possible surface area. If your vaping a Nasha product, we recommend our superior grades: Blue and Onyx Pressed, or Orange Unpressed.

Why? The higher oil-to-solid ratio means less residue, which means less time spent stopping to clean your device. Trust us, it’s worth it.

4. Don’t Overstuff Your Chamber

While it may be tempting to pack more delicious hash into your vaporizer chamber, you’ll degrade the draw and add more residue. Go slow, savor the experience, and remember you can always repack the chamber after a few hits.

5. Protect Your Investment

All vaporizers need to be carefully cleaned from time to time, but none more than a hash vaporizer. Why? As we hinted earlier, even high-quality hash—due to its nature as a pure and unprocessed cannabis concentrate—will leave a residue that must be carefully cleaned from the chamber.

Take apart and clean your hash vaporizer on a regular basis, using whichever tools and cleaners the manufacturer recommends (typically isopropyl alcohol or distilled water). Again, the investment in time will more than make up for the extended life of your vape.

Vaporizing Hash: Some Final Thoughts

As we’ve seen, while vaping hash is at heart a simple operation, it requires some advance preparation, know-how, and specialized tools for optimal results. Let’s review what we’ve shared.

Hash is at heart an artisanal cannabis concentrate. While it’s been enjoyed through bongs, chillums, and other traditional smoking tools for centuries, many modern-day users are curious about vaping hash. A vape (or vaporizer) is a high-tech device that heats cannabis to the point that the cannabinoids and terpenes volatize but do not combust

While this is, in many regards, a great way to enjoy hash, there are inherent challenges. Because it doesn’t rely on chemical- or solvent-based extraction, hash requires a little extra care and preparation when used in a vaporizer.

The main points to remember about vaporizing hash are that whatever device you use should be protected with vape wool, another name for degummed hemp fibers that keep liquid and solid hash residue from clogging—and potentially ruining—your device. On top of this, hash needs to be vaped at a slightly higher temperature than flower to get the very best enjoyment from the experience.

Follow the guidelines we share above, and you should get long, highly satisfying service from your hash vaporizer. Now the only question remaining is: How do you get started?
